Portland
- 5/4/01
Got to bed
at 4 last night after the Seattle binge. "Oh you had an early
night did you?" said Morris. I couldn't help it. Everyone
at the club was really friendy (or should that be friendly?).
We might have another "rock and roll" night in San Francisco
because we are sharing a hotel with the Young Fresh Fellows. So
we get up late and set off for the short (2 hours) drive to Portland.
Kim saved my luggage, which was about to be left behind again.
To
the rest of it you are getting used, so are we. Van. Hotel. Soundcheck.
Gig. Portland is rainy, which explains why Morris leaves the hotel
for soundcheck looking a little like Peter Sellers in the Pink
Panther. We arrive and it's a bit of a bomb-site at the gig ....
and when I find Robyn in the dressing room, his voice is going
the same way as Kim's. There is some kind of a bug going around
and we're a bit worried because we've hired recording gear for
"Soft Boys Live at the Fillmore" in San Francisco. We'll
see. He's got a new setlist which is fairly straight as set lists
go although we decide to leave a jewel in Portland cos they need
the sparkle what with all this rain.
My
friend Sandra comes to the gig and poses with Kurt, but she leaves
just before the show and I have this sad thought that I won't
see her again for a long while. It stays with me during the gig
and I shellify a bit.
During the
YFF set, Kim gets up to do the brilliant "Little Ray of Sunshine".
Great sound
onstage from the monitor lady, who later demonstrates the breadth
of her talent by showing off her wheelies in the concert hall.
Gig goes fine with a new set list from Robyn and apparently someone
leaves crying during human music. I break an 'E' string during
Stones in the encore by find myself waving de Witt away when he
offers me Jim's bass to be going on with. Spirit of '76 said Scott,
giving the thumbs up. We did Lizard as Portland's jewel and we
will leave it here, and we end with Face.
People hang
around afterwards and me and Morris chat a bit. I sign my first
Snail CD ever. A few say "see you in San Francisco"
which of course includes Eddie Tews, and I think Jim too far as
I remember. They were happy to hear a low-strung Lizard.
Back
in the hotel I take pictures of grey monsters that people have
given me in the last couple of days. Tomorrow I fly to San Francisco
which is $175 I decided to spend on myself after the Toronto from
New York via Montreal experience. See you there ....
